Roman Polanski

The film director Roman Polanski, was taken into custody in Switzerland on Saturday, while in the country to collect a lifetime achievement award at the Zurich Film Festival.

In 1977, Polanski was accused of drugging and raping a 13-year-old girl after photographing her at the home of his friend Jack Nicholson, who was away at the time of the incident.

Having only recently met the child’s mother, Polanski claimed that the photographs were for the French edition of ‘Vogue’ and they agreed that she could be photographed.  Polanski arranged for a second session but the mother later discovered photographs from the first session, showing some of her daughter topless.  On questioning her daughter on her return from the second session, the truth came out, with the girl revealing she had been given champagne and a tranquiliser before being raped and forced to commit various sex acts.

Polanski was 43-years-old at the time and was additionally charged with sodomy, child molestation and furnishing dangerous drugs to a minor.  He was released on a $2,500 bond until his court hearing on March 18th.

After his guilty plea, Polanski was ordered to a psychiatric study of 90 days, he in fact only served 42 days with his probation request claiming he was exhausted and severely affected by the brutal murder of his wife Sharon Tate in 1969.

Polanski arrived at his Paris apartment on February 2nd 1978 after fleeing the United States, hours before he was due to be sentenced in a Californian court.  Being of French/Polish origin, Polanski could not be extradited as a French citizen under any circumstance, although the case could have been heard  in France.

The U.S. Warrant for Polanski’s arrest has now been issued, 30-years after the incident and maybe now justice will be done.  Many people seem to believe that it should all be forgotten as the child is now a woman and has moved on with her life.  Why?  This man raped a child after drugging her and giving her alcohol so that he could abuse her, why should he be treated any differently from any other paedophile, I hope he stays in prison for the rest of his life.
