The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has considered that Jude Law sticking his elbow into a female photographers face is ‘reasonable’ and the actor wil not face criminal charges.
Law was attending a dinner party in July at the Automat Club in Mayfair, hosted by Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan when the alleged incident happened. He left at 12.30am and made his way outside to a waiting car where he was confronted by several photographers including the ‘victim’ Harsha Gopal.
Gopal claims that Law elbowed her in the face so hard that the blow left her face stinging the next day.
In dismissing the case a CPS spokesman said: “It is highly likely that a court would decide his actions were reasonable given that his path was deliberately impeded by a crowd of photographers.”
Gopal said: “The CPS ruling is disappointing to say the least. Court proceedings would have set the record straight. I was struck in the face while doing my job and I have not received any form of apology.”
Law escaped charges over similar allegations in 2007 when another photographer claimed they were hit by the actor, a charge that he denied.
The CPS is right in what they say and being hit could be included as a hazard of the job amongst photographers, but the photographers do also have to earn a living and so it is not particularly easy yo take sides. But it is worth Law remembering that it is these people that put the ’stars’ into the public domain and he probably needs them as much as they need him.
An apology would have been nice.
